Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) for Wastewater Treatment
Sustainable and Reliable Wastewater Treatment using MBR Technology
What is Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) and how MBR works?
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Technology combines submerged Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with an aeration system utilizing activated sludge to decompose nutrient loads in wastewater. This configuration significantly improves operational efficiency while reducing operational footprint. There are mainly two types of MBR configurations- hollow fiber or flat sheet MBR cassettes.
A typical MBR design features a primary treatment screening stage followed by the secondary treatment with the MBR process, optimizing plant size and process performance. For advanced purification, MBR product water can be further treated through Nanofiltration (NF) or Reverse Osmosis (RO) stages.
Advantages of MBR Process
The MBR technology effectively removes solid particles larger than 0.03 microns, resulting in clear treated water that contains minimal solids and harmful pathogens. With its high reliability and exceptional water quality, MBR technology is ideally suited for meeting stringent environmental compliance requirements.
MBR technology is preferred for its ability to eliminate the need for additional settling tanks, thereby reducing the overall asset footprint compared to conventional systems and providing a cost-effective solution.
Some of the proven advantages are as follows:
-
Compact biological system that improves space efficiency
-
Capable of managing high sludge retention times (SRT)
-
Produces high-quality treated water suitable for ZLD systems
-
Effective in treating and recycling complex effluents
-
Suitable for STP applications to meet regulatory requirements
-
Robust and reliable technology
